No offense cardio, but you alone are not going to give us women the toned and shapely figure we strive for.
Being someone who lifts 4-5 times per week, and has done for 5 years now, I am so keen to reach out to as many women as possible to show the major benefits of weight training. And lay down the facts on the worries that lifting makes you ‘bulky’.
Including weight training in your fitness regime will not only help tone your body, it will also increase metabolism & kcal expenditure.
(It is also the quickest most effective way to look HOT in a bikini :D)
Here’s my 6 reasons why women should get down and dirty with some iron:
- More calorie expenditure:
Just sitting reading this piece burns calories – If you lift weights! As you increase strength and lean muscle mass, your body uses calories more efficiently. So even everyday activities such as making the bed, or just brushing your hair will burn more calories.
- More effective fat loss:
Picking up heavy things burns a respectable amount of calories by itself 🙂 But the real magic happens after your workout. Lifting sets up your body for a series of metabolic reactions that allow you to utilize nutrients better (like brownies!) And this continues for up to 36 hours post workout. Endurance training by itself burns fat and muscle, whereas weight training burns almost exclusively fat. So basically, compared to cardiovascular exercise, lifting will always come out on top in the fat burning battle.
- Curves – YES you read it right…I said CURVES!
Its pretty simple really…Lifting will help create and maintain a shapely figure. CV exercise only will make you loose weight, but in the form of both fat and muscle, which will ultimately lead to the destruction of our lovely curves. The moral of the story is, the more weight training you incorporate, the more shapely your body will be.
Lifting weights empowers you. By constantly challenging yourself – your confidence grows! Along with a sense of pride or satisfaction after finishing a challenging workout, your body will also reward you with a dose of endorphins. (Feel good chemicals)
- You will gain strength – Without ‘Bulk’
Lets get this straight. The horror stories that lifting turns us women into the incredible hulk are a load of horror trash. Let me break it down:
Hormones such as testosterone are responsible for muscle growth. Women have waaaaay less testosterone than men. So naturally it is always harder and will always be a slower process to build muscle for women. Simply lifting heavy will not build muscle over night.
- You choose your shape – You can develop some nice assets!
We all have goals….Whether that be to tone up your ‘bingo wings’ or get a flat stomach. But weight training can go beyond the standard ‘toning’ and be used to build us wonderful shapely assets. The glutes for example; Squats, lunges, glute bridges, kickbacks… If you want a peachy bootie, using weights with these exercises will not only get rid of cellulite but also increase shape, size and firmness…..Leading to better assets 😀
So there we have it ladies, there is nothing more empowering for a women to be lifting a respectable amount of weight in the gym.
Feel stronger, healthier and more confident. Don’t be afraid to give it a go!
